The legendary game has been re-imagined into a 2D brawler you can play on your browser.
At this year’s E3, Square Enix finally confirmed that the long-desired remake to the classic PS1 RPG Final Fantasy 7 is in development for PS4. (Needless to say, fans are hyped.)
Exactly when this game will be released is unknown, and more than likely it will be a few years before we can return to Midgar in glorious HD.
Till then, FF7 fans can get their fix via a fan-made remake of the game; only catch is that it’s a 2D side scrolling brawler.
That’s right, a group of fans have begun work on Final Fantasy VII: Re-Imagined, a reworking of the classic as an action game in the vein of Streets of Rage or Final Fight. Similarly to those games, Re-Imagined supports local co-op, as you and a buddy can choose between Cloud and Tifa.
While now a beat-em-up game, the reimaging does retain features of what made the original so great. While traversing through levels, you can collect green gems that allow you to summon your Guardian Forces; for example, Cloud can equip Ifrit.
The Materia system returns as well, this time as an extension of the character’s attacks. This means that at the end of a hit combo, a magic spell like Ice can be used to freeze opponents. Materia can even be upgraded, allowing for even more powerful attacks.
As Final Fantasy VII: Re-Imagined is an unofficial fan project, the team who developed this game is treading on thin water with Square Enix, and there is a strong possibility that the game could be taken down. However, the team has made it pretty clear through a disclaimer that the game “is a non-profit fan made project, done purely for fun.”
