E3 2021 Recap: Square Enix Receives Mixed Responses from Gamers

And the crowd goes mild.

Square Enix has had a handful of major hits or misses over recent years and it seems they are doubling down on at least one of those titles- Marvel’s Avengers.

During the showcase, which featured more than one Marvel reveal, Square Enix debuted the previously leaked (and later confirmed) Black Panther DLC for Marvel’s Avengers. The concept of the game is cool and all but the execution just isn’t there for us. If it wasn’t for Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing, this DLC wouldn’t likely turn as many heads. And I mean that in the most respectful way possible.

Marvel’s Avengers Expansion: Black Panther | War for Wakanda

Black Panther must defend Wakanda from Klaw, who seeks to steal Vibranium for his own desires. Watch the cinematic trailer for Marvel’s Avengers Expansion: Black Panther – War for Wakanda. Available in August 2021!

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

The other major Marvel reveal was Guardians of The Galaxy, which looks decent enough but we will need to see whether or not it is improved over Avengers or if it suffers the same boring repetitive gameplay loops.

Fire up Star-Lord’s jet boots for a wild ride across the cosmos in this third-person action-adventure game, a fresh take on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. With the unpredictable Guardians at your side, blast your way from one explosive situation to another, with original and iconic Marvel characters caught in a struggle for the fate of the universe. You got this. Probably.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is coming October 26, 2021 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

STRANGER OF PARADISE FINAL FANTASY ORIGIN

With the memory of their struggle buried deep in their hearts… Jack and his allies, Ash and Jed, burn with resolve to defeat Chaos as they throw open the gates to the Chaos Shrine. Yet doubts remain—are they truly the Warriors of Light the prophecy foretold? Step into a world of dark fantasy and revel in the exhilarating, action-packed battles!

Trial version available on PlayStation 5 until June 24th, 2021.

BABYLON’S FALL

Babylon’s Fall didn’t exactly impress viewers, which you can see for yourself in the comments section for this YouTube video. With 572 Likes and more than 2K dislikes, the community is very open about the poor quality and state of the game with many stating that it looked better in earlier looks back in 2019.

With what many are referring to as a “cheap mobile game”, Babylon’s Fall looks to disappoint players in the not-so-distant future.

_______

Square Enix isn’t exactly impressing us with their reveals. Marvel’s Avengers looks like a continued letdown that will probably please the handful of players that are willing to give the Black Panther DLC a try for a couple of days before putting the game down. Marvel’s GotG looks okay but if it’s anything like Avengers, we will likely pass. Babylon’s Fall looks… just plain awful. Stranger of Paradise looks very cool and we look forward to more on that front. Other than that, a couple of smaller updates like Life Is Strange getting remastered is… fine, we suppose. But that too is not really a franchise for us.

Oh well. At least this showcase wasn’t as bad as Gearbox’s.
