First of all, how was a sequel to this movie given the go-ahead? I mean, this was literally one of two movies in my whole life that I have switched off half way through.
Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to like it. So badly. And even in that already formed favourable bias, I couldn’t sit through it. God help us all, now that there is going to be a second!!
Ok, rant over. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty.
Back in October of last year it was reported that the former Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker, James Gunn, was more than likely to write the script, but now it looks like Gunn will be on double duty for a film that’s being described not as a direct sequel but a reboot of sorts for the rag-tag crew of vigilantes (can you have a reboot so soon?). According to reports, the movie will debut under the name The Suicide Squad.
Although Gunn has had a pretty rocky couple of months after the director was unceremoniously ousted by Disney from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise after some questionable old Tweets resurfaced, the filmmaker’s star appears to be on the rise once again; not only has he basically landed the Suicide Squad 2 gig, but the Gunn-produced dark superhero tale Brightburn is set to hit theaters on May 24. So hopefully, much like his career, here’s hoping that Gunn can bring a level of redemption to the new Suicide Squad.
The Suicide Squad is currently slated for an August 2021 release date.
