Is Peter Capaldi Leaving ‘Doctor Who’?

The three-year rule may not just apply to David Tennant and Matt Smith, but Peter Capaldi as well.

[dropcap size=small]E[/dropcap]verybody leaves is one of the prevailing themes in BBC’s Doctor Who, a show about the adventures of a mad man with a time traveling blue box, and the theme applies not just to the Doctor’s companions but to the Doctor himself. In a recent interview with The Telegraph Peter Capaldi revealed that the next season of Doctor Who could very well be his last.

“This could be my final year – it’s terrifying. I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That’s my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there’ll come a day, inevitably, when you’ll be saying goodbye.”

This news is rather unfortunate considering the latest season of Doctor Who has been undoubtedly Peter Capaldi’s best. While the eighth season of Doctor Who wasn’t showrunner Steven Moffat’s best and the show saw its ratings slip, the ninth season was absolutely splendid because it was abundantly clear that Peter Capaldi had finally settled into his role as the Doctor. Sure, the show has been going through some changes with Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) departing but fans can’t help but feel like Peter Capaldi has just started.

If Peter Capaldi does, in fact, leave Doctor Who at the end of the upcoming tenth season that would make him the third actor to leave Doctor Who after three years. David Tennant, who is arguably the most popular Doctor since the show began, left Doctor Who after three years and actor Matt Smith left the show after three years as well. Hopefully, Peter Capaldi will reconsider his decision between now and at the start of the tenth season.
