According to TV Line, Overbrook Entertainment is in the early production stages of rebooting the family comedy and plans to put a new spin on Fresh Prince’s “fish-out-of-water tale!”
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t’s been 19 years since we last saw The Fresh Prince live on TV and it looks like he will make his return to Bel-Air!
Will Smith, the former Prince of Bel-Air, will serve as the executive producer for the show, along with his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith and Overbrook partners James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett. The sitcom jump started Smith’s career, where he also starred in hit movies Men in Black and Bad Boys. The NBC sitcom featured a troubled teen who moved from his home in Philadelphia to Bel-Air to live with Aunt Viv, Uncle Phil and their children Carlton, Hilary and Ashley. Smith teamed up with Quincy Jones to create the theme song for the show.
NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt told TV Line that NBC is not currently involved with Smith’s project, but he did say he would “be happy to talk to Will about it.” A source told Variety that the show’s cast would not feature any of the actors/actresses from the original and will have a brand new cast for the show. There has not been any more information on who will be starring in the show.
This isn’t the only reboot project that Smith is working on. In October, Smith announced that he is working with Fox to create a spin-off for a TV series based off of the romantic comedy Hitch!
