Smaug Burns Benedict Cumberbatch on ‘Colbert Report’

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]n his final weeks hosting The Colbert Report before taking over The Late Show next fall, Stephen Colbert is pulling out all the stops. Last week, President Barack Obama took over Colbert’s desk to present his version of the popular segment “The Word”, and now Colbert has invited another high-profile guest to the show: Smaug the Impenetrable.

Colbert is a well-known J.R.R. Tolkien fan (he even had a cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug), so it’s safe to say that Smaug is the only CGI dragon that he would allow to destroy his studio. Benedict Cumberbatch provides the voice of Smaug in The Hobbit film series as well as the interview with Colbert, and the dragon takes shots at the Sherlock star himself, calling him a “hack.” He also had some choice words for the dragons from Game of Thrones and How to Train Your Dragon.

Nation, check out the interview with Smaug the Terrible below and have a good laugh.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies storms into theaters on December 17, and the final episode of The Colbert Report airs December 18 on Comedy Central.
