Oculus Rift founder says that the company will keep the Rift an open platform for any games or content.
[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he founder of Oculus Rift, Palmer Luckey, has said that adult-oriented games and entertainment will not be prohibited on the Rift. When asked the question at the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference, he responded with “The Rift is an open platform. We don’t control what software can run on it … and that’s a big deal.” This basically means that yes, there will be porn on the Rift. Oculus allowing adult content on the Rift will open up a potentially huge market for people that are, uh, into that sort of thing.
Many other companies with VR hardware coming out in the near future also attended the conference were asked the same question but gave different answers. Samsung’s Nick DiCarlo, who was there representing the Gear VR, was said to have shift the conversation to the Gear’s publicity and how it will be available in Best Buy stores by the end of the summer. DiCarlo went on to add that Samsung is planning to bring many major media outlets to the Gear through its content service Milk VR.
Clay Bavor, who was representing Google Cardboard VR, said that the Cardboard’s goal was to serve as an inexpensive introduction to VR, which could help both Oculus and Samsung by serving as an affordable entry point into the market.
Sixense CEO Amir Rubin talked about how out of the 16,000 developers that are employed by his company at the moment, about 20 percent are working on what would be considered traditional games. Many are implementing the VR to be an educational tool or be used for health applications.
The virtual reality headset is one of the most anticipated things coming to gaming at this time. The Oculus Rift consumer model is set for release early in 2016. Pricing has not been announced but Oculus has said that more information will be released at this years E3.
