Nintendo announces a new multiplayer title in the Metroid series, but our favorite heroine seems to be absent.

[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]Metroid Prime: Federation Force announced for 3DS. Appears to be multiplayer-only in style of Metroid Prime: Hunters. ‘Blast Ball’ mode looks like sci-fi 3-on-3 soccer. No Samus Aran shown, as of yet. Release date 2016.[/toggler]

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t’s been a while since we’ve seen our girl Samus… aaaand the reveal trailer for Metroid Prime: Federation Force keeps us waiting. This is the first Metroid title, that we’re seeing, since Metroid: Other M back in 2010. The trailer is less than a minute and, while it shows off some pretty blocky gameplay, there’s no clear indication if it’ll be strictly multiplayer.

Will there be a single-player campaign that will tie-in to the Metroid Prime story? We don’t know, but the game is donning the Metroid Prime title, so it’s not impossible. A separate game mode, titled ‘Blast Ball’, made its debut during the Nintendo World Championships sans the Metroid part of the title. Blast Ball looks like a 3-on-3, sci-fi soccer-like game. This looks like a pretty lazy cash-in, Nintendo.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force releases for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016.
