His films may have flopped, but his wallet is still bulging.
[dropcap size=small]J[/dropcap]ohnny Depp has been named by Forbes as Hollywood’s most overpaid actor. The list looks at those actors who still earn top dollar personally, even if their films don’t rake in the expected profits.
Depp was once box office dynamite, with many hugely successful collaborations with Tim Burton, and of course, as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Lately however, Depp has been in some rather lacklustre flicks that have failed to conquer the box office and draw in viewers.
The two biggest titles Depp fronted before June this year were Mortdecai and Transcendence, both of which (according to Forbes) went relatively unnoticed in the box office among other big blockbustre titles this year:
Mortdecai earned a dreary 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed just $47 million on a $60 million budget, while Transcendence barely made back its $100 million production costs at the ticketing booth.
Despite their underwhelming performances at the box office worldwide, Depp still made a pretty penny himself, which has earnt him this overpaid moniker.
In previous years Will Farrell has taken the title in 2009, and Adam Sandler has been a frequent offender.
Depp might have more success in terms of the box office in future, with upcoming sequel projects Alice Through the Looking Glass (27 May, 2016), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (7 July, 2017).
