[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he news that Mad Max: Fury Road was voted best film of the year by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) is big, big news. The post-apocalyptic film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May and it apparently made quite the impression.

Mad Max: Fury Road beat out three other film finalists for the best film honor. These films were Laszlo Nemes’ Son of Saul, Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s The Assassin and Jafar Panahi’s Taxi. Mad Max: Fury Road was given the best film award after all FIPRESCI memebers, who are all international film critics, voted for the award.

“You could have knocked me over with a feather!,” director George Miller said in response to the news. “It’s lovely to have this great cohort of critics acknowledge our collective labours in this way.”

The FIPRESCI Grand Prix award will be given to director George Miller during the San Sebastian Film Festival on Sept. 18, where Mad Max: Fury Road will get a special screening.
