Great Scott!
[dropcap size=small]B[/dropcap]ack to the Future is one of the best movie trilogies out there, and today we celebrate the fact that back in 1985, Marty McFly and Doc traveled into the future on a very particular date – today’s date to be exact. That’s right, 21st October, 2015.
To mark this momentous day, we’re going to recall our favourite moments from the film that saw our time travelling duo venture into our current year, Back to the Future: Part II.
This was no small feat, the film has far too many fantastic moments, and slimming it down to a top ten proved harder than first anticipated, but we got there eventually.
10. The Rehydrator
Okay, who didn’t want one of these when they saw it for the first time in Back to the Future: Part II? This futuristic gizmo turned a frozen, teeny tiny pizza, into a sumptuous wonder for the whole McFly clan to enjoy. Sadly, even though we’re now in 2015, the rehydrator never became a reality. I guess we’ll just have to stick to the microwave.
9. Wild Gunman
Remember the 80’s nostalgia cafe where McFly played Wild Gunman on the arcade machine, and a very young Elijah wood and his friend proclaimed that it was a baby’s game? Well, you should. The entire sequence in the 80’s cafe is pure brilliance, and I’m still pining for a cafe just like it in our version of 2015. In a way, they nailed this on the head, and younger generations are sure to be laughing at the old graphics of yesteryear’s arcade games.
8. Read my fax!
Oh yes, we’re all still using fax machines in our everyday lives aren’t we? And we totally have them adorning every wall in the house too. It’s one thing they didn’t get quite right, but you’ve got to admit, several fax machines printing out the same simultaneous message of ‘you’re fired’, really packs a punch. Poor future Marty.
7. Self tying Nike shoes and self drying jacket
Everyone will remember those nifty self tying Nike shoes Marty dons as he tries to blend in, in 2015. The shoes even became a reality, and you can genuinely buy shoes that are an exact replica of the ones McFly wears. But footwear hasn’t really advanced all that much, and we’re still having to labouriously tie our own shoes. The self drying jacket was such a neat idea. Can we get those too?
6. Hoverboard race
The Hoverboard was another neat invention Back to the Future: Part II predicated would be the norm in 2015, and indeed it has been successfully replicated just as the shoes. The scene in which McFly escapes the wrath of Griff on the colourful board is fantastic, and the way it echoes the past events on an ordinary skateboard from the first film is incredibly well done.
5. Biff meets his younger self
Biff is hands down one of the best characters in the franchise, and when we get to see old and young Biff meet each other, magic happens. Old Biff secured himself the sports almanac that would change the course of his life. The sequence was done so brilliantly. ‘Who you callin’ butthead? Butthead.’
4. Biff as a casino tycoon
We get to see Biff as a wealthy, successful casino owner (and Donald Trump look-a-like), who has many a questionable acquaintance at his beck and call. Biff’s influence certainly did quite a number on Hill Valley, and it was as though they took Marty’s nightmare and turned it into reality; most especially when it came to his mothers fate in that future life. It was a such a fun twist to see just what would happen if Biff got his way.
3. Re-living the past, again
The way the film re-hashes moments we’ve seen in the first film from a different perspective was so cleverly done, and watching the two films back to back is simply perfection. We see how the guitarist hurt his hand and caused Marty from the first film to play the guitar in that famous scene in the 50’s. We see daddio McFly do a repeat performance of socking Biff square in the jaw once again, and how future Marty helps past Marty out. It’s all pretty impressive.
2. Marty gets a letter from the cowboy era
The end of this film was a fantastic cliff hanger and precursor to part III, and in classic Back to the Future style, it leaves you wanting more. The letter was such a great way to tease the audience about the setting of the next instalment.
1. A perfect loop
Finally, the way the film ends with Marty returning back to Doc in a scene we’ve seen before at the clock tower- just moments after he returned to 1985 in the 50’s – is pure brilliance. The thought that went into this intricate time travelling plot is fantastic, and it flows into a perfect loop of events that’s a sheer joy to behold. Those famous flaming tire tracks are hard to forget, and it’s one of the best endings of all time.
Enjoy Back to the Future day!
