Director Guillermo del Toro is set to meet up with Ron Perlman and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]f you’re a fan of that big red demon dude with an oversized arm and a penchant for big cigars, then you’ll be happy to discover Hellboy might still be making his way to the big screens for a third instalment.

We haven’t seen the badass, lovable anti-hero since 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but in recent years the possibility of Hellboy 3 has been on the cards. Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, and director Guillermo del Toro have been very vocal about wanting to do a third film and finish off what they had always hoped would be a Hellboy trilogy. Perlman even went as far as saying he felt “obligated” to make it for the fans.

However, the film has been in a constant state of will-they-or-won’t-they after several studios passed on the project, and del Toro and Perlman’s busy schedules prevented the film from getting off the ground.

But del Toro is clearly not about to give up just yet. The Trollhunters director recently sent out a tweet which revealed some headway has been made to get the film’s wheels in motion. Guillermo let fans know he had spoken to Perlman regarding the film and renewed our hopes by stating that he’s set to approach Hellboy comic creator, Mike Mignola:

Back in 2015, Perlman talked with IGN about his eagerness to reprise the role of the gun-toting demon with sideburns, after which he went on to shed some light on a discussion he’d had with del Toro about their plans for the film’s look and feel:

Guillermo [del Toro] shared with me kind of what the third and final instalment would look like, and it’s incredibly highly theatrical. It’s very charged; it’s got a huge dynamic to it. And it’s very cinematic.

Perlman then went to say they weren’t finished with Hellboy yet, and that they “owed it to the fans” to make the film a reality:

Clearly, we’re not finished. We’re not finished until we find out whether this guy’s [Hellboy] gonna meet his destiny, or whether he’s gonna find a way to avoid it. So that’s what the third instalment would be…We owe it to the fans and it’s essential that we finish this; it’s too good an idea to not do.

You certainly can’t say del Toro and Perlman aren’t dedicated, and it’s thanks to this dedication that we may very well see Hellboy 3 happen in future.
