Ron Perlman Will Make Hellboy 3, Even if He Doesn’t Want to

Perlman gives his reasons for supporting a third Hellboy movie despite having no interest in returning to the franchise.

[dropcap size=small]G[/dropcap]uillermo del Toro has been trying to finish the Hellboy trilogy for some time. Columbia and Universal have both passed on the movie, but del Toro is refusing to give up, claiming he would fund the movie himself if he didn’t keep spending his money on ‘rubber monsters‘.

Star Ron Perlman has been right behind his Hellboy director, gathering support on social media and at conventions, but the Sons of Anarchy star has this week revealed that he doesn’t want to make a Hellboy 3. Speaking at a TCA (Television Critics Association) panel to promote his new Amazon show, Hand of God, Perlman explained why he is pushing so hard for a movie he doesn’t want to make.

‘Let me make the record clear. I don’t want to do Hellboy 2. It’s a pain in the ass to put that make-up on and take it off. But I feel we’re obligated to finish the story. That’s it. End of conversation.’

Then Perlman said some stuff about mountains.

‘I got no problems with forcing the conversation. We’re in the business of moving mountains, those of us who are used to working in mainstream film and TV. Don’t come to me with details and problems; just tell me how to move the mountain.’

We’re translating this to mean his continued support is simply a response to the lack of studio interest.

Finding the time to finish the trilogy could be difficult. As well as producing and starring in Hand of God, Perlman is now developing his own movies.

‘I just launched my own movie studio so we have four things in production right now. We’re putting three of four more in production as we speak so it’s going to be an amazing year, along with Hand of God which I’m as proud of as anything I’ve ever done.’

And del Toro wants to do it quickly, recognizing that ‘Ron is no spring chicken’. Perlman, though, says there is no cut off point as far as he’s concerned.

‘Put the make-up on, you can shoot me in a wheelchair and I’ll still be Hellboy. I guess the only cut off point is when they actually close the box. If you don’t see me get up and go, ‘Hang on, I was kidding,’ then I’m still ready.”

They’ll be making Hellboy 4 by the time we understand what he’s on about.
