In Quantic Dream’s new title every decision you make will have consequences.
[dropcap size=small]D[/dropcap]uring Sony’s E3 conference a trailer debuted for the brand new title from studio Quantic Dream, Detroit: Become Human.
Quantic Dream are well known for their story and character-driven titles, Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, which put players at the forefront of making choices that effect the outcome of the game’s main story arc. Detroit: Become Human certainly looks set to follow this trend, with an interesting concept at its heart, and player choices galore.
In the new trailer dropped at E3, we’ve been introduced to a brand new playable character who comes in the shape of a male android named Conner. Connor is revealed to be a ‘Deviant Hunter’ who uses his investigative skills to solve cases on behalf of the police force.
‘Connor is an advanced prototype assigned to police forces to help them investigate cases involving deviants. He is cold and analytical; he thinks fast and benefits from some surprising advanced features. He is very determined and nothing matters more to him than accomplishing the mission he was programmed for.’
Check out the intense trailer below, where we see Connor deal with a tricky hostage situation, whilst showcasing some of the aspects of game-play we can expect to experience in Connor’s shoes:
The trailer highlights the dark, near-future setting of Detroit, which serves as a backdrop to what is one very choice heavy game. Evidently androids are mistrusted by society, and it’s sure to explore the uncanny likeness of an android who looks altogether human, and what happens when they themselves veer towards a more human side.
Detroit is based off of a short called Kara made by the studio back in 2012, which explores the aforementioned idea of a sentient android who thinks and feels just like a human.
The short introduces us to a female android of the same name being assembled. Kara ends up going beyond her programming to have real human emotions, and when she’s almost disassembled for being ‘defective,’ her human side wins over her creator, and Kara is allowed to go out into the world with the other androids. The short paints a powerful portrait of the rather disturbing nature of creating something that’s so close to a human being.
It wasn’t until Paris Games Week 2015 that we saw the return of Kara, along with the announcement that the concept was finally being made into a game. Kara will be another playable character alongside Connor in Detroit, in which she’s gotten an updated look.
Quantic Dream boasts of a new in-game engine specifically developed for the title, to allow for a visually versatile game with more dynamic lighting, shading and camera movement – and from what we’ve seen so far, the game is looking very good indeed.
‘Emotions, dilemmas and making difficult choices’ are at the forefront of the game’s concept, and at it’s heart the narrative explores themes such as freedom and self discovery. If Detroit is anything like Quantic’s previous titles, it’s sure to offer up a lot of character development.
Detroit: Become Human looks set to be a very interesting title, which delivers an intriguing concept with lots of choices to make and several different outcomes to see. Overall, the dark backdrop and compelling narrative focus makes this new game from Quantic Dream one to watch.
Detroit: Become Human is set to be a PS4 exclusive. A release date has not yet been announced.
