Venom Spinoff Gets Title + Female Spider-Man Spinoff?

[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t’s been a while since the topic of a Venom spinoff gained any traction and started showing some progress. No casting announcements were made (aside from stating it would not be Topher Grace), plot details were kept under wraps, etc. Though now it seems like we finally have something to discuss. Alex Kurtzman and Ed Solomon have been attached as the screenwriting duo while Kurtzman will be the one to direct. In addition, the movie has gotten somewhat of a tentative title: Venom Carnage. We’ll, that’s nothing if not original, right? If you were to ask us, we would say that is hardly a title, but we are still very excited. “Why?”, you ask? Well, if the title is any hint, and it is, then it would appear that one of the major plot points in the movie will be focused on none other than Cletus Kasady, the red symbiote’s host better known as Carnage.

Carnage

In the comics, Kasady is a homicidal maniac, having successfully murdered members of his own family, and attempting others. After a string of sadistic killings, Cletus Kasady was sent to prison where he met Eddie Brock, also known as Venom. It was there that the Venom symbiote left behind an offspring, that merged with Kasady and created the red symbiotic psychopath later known to Spider-Man, as Carnage.

While news has been rather scarce regarding what to expect in the film, it would make sense that Venom (who was stated early on as being a neutral anti-hero) would have to go toe-to-toe with someone like Carnage, who shares similar abilities and attributes.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, written by Kurtzman and Ed Solomon, Venom Carnage is set to release TBD 2017.

We reported back in July that Sony had plans to do a variety of spinoff movies and not just with Venom. Alongside the alien symbiote attached to Eddie Brock, we were looking at a Sinister Six and all the different combinations of members that group has had over years, leaving much room for sequels that will likely to follow. But now it appears that we will be getting another planned Spidey spinoff film, this time in the form of a female lead.

Please, Sony. Make it so.

It is definitely possible to see a female lead swing in to the wall-crawler’s world. Let us not forget Jessica Drew, after all. And considering the changes Marvel is making to their comics, such as Thor being a woman, Sony recognizes the lack of strong female superheroes and could definitely shake things up should they decide to pursue such direction.

Then again, there are plenty of female characters in Spider-Man’s universe alone that could be entertaining to see on the big screen if done right. Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, for instance, is quite popular amongst comic fans as a sort of selfish, sort of selfless at times, anti-hero/thief-turned-vigilante/love-interest for Spider-Man/Peter Parker. It would make sense to pursue a character like Black Cat instead of another web-slinger, so as to not take away the attention on the mainstream Amazing Spider-Man franchise. What do you think? Would you prefer to see a female Spidey? Or Felicia Hardy?

We are totally cool with either.
We are totally cool with this.

Mostly speculation at this point, the unannounced female superhero film is being considered for a 2017 release. No cast or crew announcements have been made at this time, but we will keep you updated.
