Disney has a lot in store for the Star Wars franchise including a newly announced prequel about Han Solo directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.
With its purchase of LucasFilm, Disney has started to release a number of various plans for the Star Wars film franchise. Along with a series of sequels set to be released in the upcoming years, Disney has started working on a prequel based on the Han Solo character.
Written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, the prequel is set to release in May of 2018. The directors of the movie are said to be directed by the dynamic duo of Christopher Miller and Phil Lord. The two have recently gained popularity through their partnership in directing the 21 Jump Street films and The Lego Movie.
The story of the movie is said to follow the early life of smuggler Han Solo and how he became the mischievous but heroic scoundrel he is when we meet in him Star Wars Episode IV.
Lawrence Kasdan helped co-write The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens while Jon Kasdan has not partaken in any Star Wars films. The two are extremely excited to work on the film together along with the likes of Miller and Lord. The Kasdans said in a recent interview they were “so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the ‘Star Wars’ universe…They’re two of the smartest funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”
Kathleen Kennedy will be producing the film and had only positive things to say about the film crew lined up for the movie. She claimed that the Kasdans are very educated on the character while Miller and Lord bring “wit, style, energy, and heart to tell Han’s story.”
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to release Christmas 2015 while the Han Solo prequel will not come out until May 18th, 2018.
