So that’s why.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]lice Eve’s role as Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness was pretty prominent, and as the film came to a close, everything looked set for her to become a member of the crew. So when Star Trek Beyond was announced and Eve was absent from the cast list, folks began to scratch their heads.
Marcus is decidedly absent from Beyond, and many couldn’t but help but wonder why. Well, now we finally know thanks to Simon Pegg – who penned the script and screenplay alongside Doug Jung.
Pegg got to talking about the film in an episode of the official Star Trek Podcast (via io9), where he revealed that since they couldn’t give her a role in the events of the film she deserved, they decided to leave her out of it completely:
“We thought rather than have Carol Marcus be not used to a reasonable capacity, let’s just not include her, have her be alive, in canon, and be ready to come back at any time.”
So since they couldn’t include Marcus in a way that would do her character justice, they thought it best to cut her out and keep her character within the canon for future projects.
Pegg went on to explain that they had worked on a part of the script to provide viewers with an answer as to why she is absent in Beyond, but it didn’t make the final cut:
“I think we had some lines to explain her absence in one of the initial drafts that had her going off to start work on the Genesis project and do sort of very, very early research on that, but it didn’t make it into the final cut.”
So there you have it. I suppose we would rather see Marcus in a role that befits her character rather than just having her there for the sake of it, and perhaps this means we’ll be seeing the character again in future if another Trek film gets made.
