Studio greenlights Pitch Perfect 3 after success of Elizabeth Banks’s sequel.
[dropcap size=small]P[/dropcap]itch Perfect 2 has had a remarkable box office run, bringing in over $250 million worldwide and surpassing School of Rock as the highest-grossing musical comedy film of all time. A third film was on the cards ever since the film’s impressive opening weekend, but Collider reports that Pitch Perfect 3 has been a thing for a lot longer than we imagined.
The casting of True Grit actress Hailee Steinfeld, and her multi-film contract should have given it away. Pitch Perfect 3 is happening, and it seems as though Steinfeld is poised to lead the Pitch Perfect franchise beyond a simple trilogy.
It’s still unclear whether current stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson will even return for the third instalment. Both are out of contract following the sequel, so their return will surely cost Universal Pictures a heavy paycheck. Director Elizabeth Banks will no doubt be in high demand as well. Hollywood is desperate for more female directors, and Banks’s name will be talked about high and wide after her first, and successful, attempt at a high-budget franchise movie. Universal should be prepared to offer her the sky. They can’t afford to lose Banks, who also co-produced and starred in PP2.
Until we have more news on how the cast and crew is taking shape, we have no idea how the new film will feel in comparison to the first two. All we know for sure is that Pitch Perfect 3 is coming.
Pitch Perfect 2 is still in cinemas worldwide. It will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in September this year.
