The sequel to Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, is currently in the works![toggler title=”TL;DR” ]David Ellison, CEO of the production company Skydance, confirmed on Thursday that a shooting script is in development. He said that, “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.” Tom Cruise will be reprising his role as Maverick and Justin Marks is writing the screenplay.[/toggler]
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t has been thirty years since the blockbuster film Top Gun was released in theaters and Tom Cruise was ejected (pun not intended) into the spotlight. Since then many fans of the movie have been begging for a sequel, which has spent five years in development. Luckily for you fans it seems that Top Gun 2 has finally gotten off the ground and out of the danger zone (pun intended).
In Berlin at the Terminator Genisys press-day interview Skydance’s CEO, David Ellison, was asked what the current status on Top Gun 2 was and what fans of the original film could expect from the sequel.
“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy [have] turned into today,” Ellison said told reporters. “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”
David Ellison went on to say that Top Gun 2 will be released in IMAX and 3-D. He had this to say about the plot of the sequel:
“When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into in this movie.”
Now the only question that remains on everyone’s mind is if Kenny Loggins will return to write another bad-ass song about dog fighting.
