Fingers crossed for The World Ends with You though.
In an interview with GameSpot, Kingdom Hearts 3 co-director Tai Yasue revealed that Sora and company will not visit any worlds based off Final Fantasy in the upcoming game.
“We’re not adding any Final Fantasy worlds. A lot of the original [to Kingdom Hearts] worlds [Hollow Bastion, Traverse Town, etc.] had Final Fantasy characters in them. At this moment, we are not really coming up with any plans for that, we’re making original worlds and Disney worlds.”
Final Fantasy is an integral part of Kingdom Hearts. Spells, abilities, and especially characters from the legendary JRPG series have be present in some form or another in nearly every KH game.
Honestly, this news isn’t too surprising though. Never before have we visited a world based off a specific location from Final Fantasy (like Midgar, Spira, or Gaia) in a KH game. Usually, the FF characters hail from an original world in the KH universe. For example, Cloud, Aerith, Leon, Yuffie, and Cid are all from Hollow Bastion, and characters like Seifer and Vivi are from Twilight Town. Other characters may occasionally pop up in a Disney world, like Auron in Olympus Coliseum or Moogles selling and synthesizing stuff all over the place in KH2.
Yasue went on to emphasize that the Disney worlds that will be in the game are chosen based on how well they complement new gameplay mechanics, and whether they offer variety.
“The best thing would be to have Disney Worlds every recognize and are famous, but that are also distinct and unique. We want the difference and variety, we don’t’ want a lot of the same thing.”
We’re glad lots of thought is being put into worlds will be in the game (so far, Olympus Coliseum and worlds based off Tangled and Big Hero 6 have only been confirmed), but we can’t help but imagine what could have been if we visited a classic FF locale like Midgar.
Plus, where is the Cloud/Sephiroth storyline going to wrap-up? If it wraps-up…
Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming to PS4 and Xbox One. Someday.
