As we reported yesterday, Nightdive Studios, celebrated for their remasters of “Dark Forces” and “Turok,” appeared to be planning on revitalizing 2002 cult classic The Thing using their retro-focused KEX Engine. Earlier today, IGN reported the studio will indeed be developing The Thing: Remastered and it will come with all kinds of new and improved features. Among them will be an impressive native 4K resolution at 120 FPS on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. What’s more, enhanced models, textures, animations, and new lighting and atmospheric effects will also be featured, making this already gripping game even more intense and immersive.

“The Thing,” originally launched in 2002 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC, is a third-person action horror game developed by Computer Artworks. As an official sequel to John Carpenter’s legendary horror film, the game follows Army Special Forces soldier Captain J.F. Blake and his team as they investigate the aftermath of the events depicted in the 1982 movie. Their mission quickly descends into chaos as Blake battles harsh weather, rising paranoia, and terrifying alien entities within the Antarctic base.

“Working within the universe of the iconic ‘The Thing’ has been an extraordinary opportunity for us at Nightdive Studios,” said Larry Kuperman, Director of Business Development. “The 1982 film is a milestone in horror, and with ‘The Thing: Remastered,’ we honor that legacy and the remarkable game created by Computer Artworks that expanded the story.”

“The Thing: Remastered” will also feature trophies and achievements on supported platforms. Gamers can look forward to its release on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC later this year. A special treat for fans: Director John Carpenter makes a cameo appearance in the game.

The remastered edition brings back the 2002 third-person survival horror shooter, blending fast-paced squad action with survival horror. Enhancements include antialiasing, per-pixel lighting, 4K resolution, and up to 144 FPS. Players will once again step into the role of Cpt. J.F. Blake, leading a U.S. Special Forces rescue team sent to investigate the chilling events and mysterious deaths at the Outpost 31 research facility in Antarctica. In these unforgiving surroundings, the team encounters a shape-shifting alien that mimics the appearance of its victims. Trapped by the elements and infected by this horrific entity, utilizing all team members is crucial for survival—if only you knew which ones were still human…
