Tonight’s ‘Modern Family’ Never Leaves a Mac Screen

Wednesday’s episode of ABC’s hit comedy Modern Family is sure to be a unique one.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he episode, titled “Connection Lost” takes place entirely on a character’s MacBook Pro laptop. This concept may seem a bit gimmicky, but according to sources, the episode does feel “like a half-hour Apple commercial- but it actually works.”

This particular change to the sitcom’s formula isn’t exactly innovative, as the same creative choice has been made before in other mediums (Kinda reminds me of Apple’s own ‘innovations’ as of late).

“Introducing our new iPhone, now with capabilities that have already been available for years on other phones.”

The concept for “Connection Lost” is becoming a sort of sub-genre, which The Verge categorizes as “screen-capture filmmaking.” Commercials and short films have utilized similar techniques, and Universal is working on a horror film based around the conceit.

The entire Modern Family episode will take place on the computer screen of Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) as she waits around in the airport. She’s had a disagreement with her daughter Haley (Sarah Hyland) and can’t get a hold of her. Throughout the course of the episode, we’ll see Claire jumping through various apps, FaceTime calls, iMessages and more in an effort to track down Haley.

Sounds like a whole lot of product placement for Apple right? According to The Verge, though, by utilizing clever writing and strong direction, the episode comes across more like a glowing love letter to Apple instead of like a downright advertisement.

Based on early press reviews (what they saw was not the final version of the episode), it sounds like this could be a very clever episode, and has a lot of opportunities for a slew of gags that wouldn’t be achievable in the regular format. It could well become a highlight for the entire series.
