If you happened to turn on any episode of Saturday Night Live between 2005 and 2012, then it’s likely you’ve heard of The Lonely Island, or at least their work.
Comprised of Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer, and Jorma Taccone, the comedy trio known as The Lonely Island have made three musical comedy albums featuring hits like “I Just Had Sex”, “I’m On A Boat”, and the Emmy award winning “Dick In A Box”, two feature length films, and countless Digital Shorts for SNL which resulted in their rise to viral fame.
The group have now sold an untitled comedy project to Universal and Judd Apatow is set to produce. Nothing is currently known about the project except that it will star all three members, will be “set in the world of music”, and Akiva and Jorma will act as co-directors. Fully capable hands as Akiva has directed almost every Digital Short, the cult classic Hot Rod, and the alien comedy The Watch, and Jorma directed the hilarious MacGruber.
I’m not about to “jizz in my pants” just yet, but with Apatow’s name attached, Andy Samberg’s newfound Brooklyn Nine Nine fan base, and the group’s extensive knowledge of the musical comedy genre, the film already seems to be set up for success.
