Actor Simon Pegg says that the studio was worried the original script was too Star Trek-y.
[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]imon Pegg, also known as Scotty in the Trek community, threw down some interesting information concerning the original script for Star Trek 3. In a recent interview with Radio Times magazine he claims that Paramount was not satisfied with the original script, “they had a script for Star Trek that wasn’t really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little bit too Star Trek-y.” Wait, what?
It would appear that Paramount was not pleased with the direction that Roberto Orci was taking the script which subsequently led them to replace Orci in the directors seat with Justin Lin. Star Trek Into Darkness was a let down in the eyes of the studio as it only grossed 500 million world-wide. According to Pegg the studio wants to compete in the same league as The Avengers so a direction change needed to be made. “People don’t see it being a fun, brightly coloured, Saturday night entertainment like the Avengers.”
Who knows what direction they plan to take the series or whether they will be successful in enticing the younger generation that grew up not knowing what a ‘Trekkie’ was to purchase tickets. What we do know is that Pegg has been helping to re-work the script under a ridiculously tight dead-line. “We started again six months before we were due to start shooting, which is insane! In fact, we start shooting in Vancouver in four weeks – and we’re only handing in our first draft today.” It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for ’em.
Star Trek 3, likely to be titled Star Trek Beyond, is slated to be in theaters July 8th, 2016 starring Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg.
