Next Major Resident Evil Title Rumored to Be “Open World”

Notorious insider 'Dusk Golem' claims the next game is the franchise's biggest yet...

The Resident Evil series is rumored to take a bold step into the realm of open-world gaming with its next installment. Despite widespread speculation, Capcom has remained tight-lipped about any official announcements regarding this development which has fueled leakers and supposed insiders to share what little they claim to know. But take anything on that topic with a grain of salt, especially with what you are about to read.

Insider Dusk Golem has revealed intriguing details suggesting that Resident Evil 9 is harnessing the open-world capabilities of the renowned RE Engine, previously showcased in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Another project utilizing this engine, Monster Hunter Wild, is also rumored to embrace the open-world format.

Fans who beat Resident Evil Village will recall the ending which sees Chris Redfield at odds with the BSAA who is using zombie bioweapons as field soldiers, something that Chris takes issue with. The next game, which has been rumored to adopt the name “Apocalypse”, is said to feature Chris traversing across Europe, taking on the BSAA with a female companion’s help (Jill?). The game may see the demise of a beloved character with the possibility of Chris retiring by the story’s end with Rose possibly picking up the mantle as the next major franchise lead.

Capcom’s strategy reportedly involves greenlighting projects in sets of three. Past successes such as Resident Evil 7, the Resident Evil 2 remake, and Devil May Cry 5 were allegedly approved in close succession to leverage the capabilities of the RE Engine. This approach seems to have continued with the approval of Dragon’s Dogma 2, Monster Hunter Wild, and the highly anticipated Resident Evil 9.

While Capcom has refrained from making any official declarations about Resident Evil 9, speculation heightened when Dusk Golem suggested a potential announcement in the fall of 2024, with a slated release for 2025. If rumors hold true, Resident Evil 9 promises to be a monumental addition to the franchise, touted as its most expansive installment yet.

Notably, Dragon’s Dogma 2 recently hit the shelves, marking a significant milestone in Capcom’s gaming lineup. Meanwhile, fans eagerly await the arrival of Monster Hunter Wild, slated for release in 2025, further fueling anticipation within the gaming community.
