Starbreeze Studios announces Overkill’s The Walking Dead, an ultimate survival horror game.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he latest installment in the series of The Walking Dead licensed games is going to be produced by Overkill, a Starbreeze Studio, and Skybound Interactive. Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, commented on Telltale’s TWD franchise success at SXSW, saying that telling new and inventive stories makes for a greater success than putting Daryl Dixon into the game. This comment is believed to be a jab at Activision’s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, which mostly relied on cross-promotion and marketing with the show (the game also received widely negative reviews). It was also stated that TWD will encompass a larger world than Payday 2, while sharing familiar gameplay styles with the Payday series.

Kirkman had this to say about the upcoming game by Overkill and Starbreeze via Polygon.com:

I can say that it will be Payday-esque because (Overkill & Starbreeze) are currently doing Payday. But I’m told it will be in a bigger world than Payday currently encompasses. They are going to be learning a lot of stuff from Payday that they will be incorporating into The Walking Dead game. There will be announcements about the game very soon.”

[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]tarbreeze Studio’s Q&A pertaining to the newly announced game hints at potential crossovers between Payday 2 and The Walking Dead, though this is highly unlikely, but not entirely implausible. Payday 2 will also be introducing a free weapon, from The Walking Dead, called the “Lucille Baseball Bat” (fans of TWD will recognize this right away). Also, for you Payday 2 heisters, updates and planned DLC will continue for Payday 2 for at least another year. The Walking Dead, by Starbreeze Studios, is also likely to have an M-rating, and no potential platforms have been named at this time.
