New company president Tatsumi Kimishima assures that the next console will be “unique and different.”
[dropcap size=small]N[/dropcap]intendo has had successful consoles made in the past, specifically the Wii and Wii U consoles. Nintendo’s next console, titled NX, won’t have any details released until next year.
New company president Tatsumi Kimishimi, who took over for Satoru Iwata in September, did hint that the console will not become the next Wii. Kimishimi went into more detail about the new project in an interview with Time Magazine.
“It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”
There have been previous reports that the next device would be mobile/console hybrid, with a separate unit that “could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use.” It also expected to be more powerful than the previous Wii systems and will contend with the Xbox One and Playstation 4. Nintendo will reveal more about the NX project next year through game developers, including Dragon Quest creator Square Enix, are already brainstorming titles for the new console.
Kimishimi admitted that the NX has no special meaning to it when they went over potential names for their new project, or at least that he is aware of. “Or perhaps Mr. Iwata had meant to tell me and then never got the chance.”
