Han and Lando in the mooooorrrning!
UPDATE: 10/21/16
It happened! Lucasfilm (via starwars.com) confirmed that Donald Glover has been cast as young Lando Calrissian for the Han Solo Star Wars anthology film.
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film’s directors. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
We can’t think of a better way to end a week where the Nintendo Switch was revealed, Red Dead Redemption 2 was announced, and the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 / Logan trailer hit. The hype is real.
The original story (8/16/16) follows:
Last week The Wrap reported that casting begun for a young version of the galaxy’s coolest cat, and favorite backstabbing gambling buddy, Lando Calrissian. The character is apparently set to appear in the upcoming Star Wars anthology film starring a young Han Solo.
Since then, Birth Movies Death has reported that film’s directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie), already have a first choice in mind for the role:
Donald Glover.
Glover is best known through his musical career has the rapper Childish Gambino, and for his role as Troy “Butt Soup” Barnes in the cult sitcom Community.
Additional details on this story have yet to emerge, but let’s get this out of the way first:
THIS IS PERFECT.
Say what you will about Alden Ehrenreich playing young Solo, but we cannot think of a better person to play Lando. Glover has proven comedic chops, is capable of being extremely charming, and above all: he can be smooth.
Miller. Lord. Disney. Make this happen.
And cast Danny Pudi as Lobot.
The Han Solo Anthology film hits theaters on May 25, 2018.
