Miles Morales’ Name Dropped in Spider-man: Homecoming Deleted Scene

An easter-egg featuring the second Spidey features a name-drop cut from the theatrical release.

During a brief encounter with Spider-Man, Aaron Davis, better known as the Prowler (played by Donald Glover), expresses his displeasure with the current state of the neighborhood having dangerous alien-tech weapons hitting the street before adding that he has a nephew who lives there.

After the altercation, Spider-Man takes off, leaving David webbed to the trunk of his car as punishment for being a criminal. The clip that was removed from the theatrical release expands on this scene, showing Davis’ futile attempts to break free from his web constraints before they dissolve (Spider-Man says it’ll take two hours). Moments later, Davis is on the phone apologizing for running late to a “Miles” who is on the other end.

The clip, which was uploaded to YouTube and then quickly taken down, could show some major significance later down the road depending on the future of Peter Parker’s position as New York’s Spider-Man.

In the comics that a large majority of the MCU draws from, takes major cues from the Ultimate Universe, a universe where Peter Parker is killed at the hands of Green Goblin (technically having bled out from a gunshot wound during his battle with Norman Osborne), which gives birth to the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

Miles becomes Spider-Man after having been bitten by a spider that managed to stow-away in his uncle Aaron’s (the Prowler) bag after a burglary at Oscorp. Aaron Davis had no idea the spider slipped into his bag, but on a visit to see Miles, the spider crawls out and bites Miles, giving him the same powers Peter has, and then some.

Yes you are, Miles. Yes, you are.

.

Feeling guilty for not stepping in to help Peter during his fight with Goblin (Miles had his powers for a while well before Peter’s final battle but kept them secret), Miles tries to follow suit, literally, by dawning a Spider-Man costume and fighting crime.

The comic story revolving around Miles Morales is fun and worth the read, and if the films continue down this path, it is possible that Peter may die eventually, and when that happens, Miles may have some large boots to fill.

Note: Peter later comes back, having apparently never been killed, and the two ‘Spider-Men’ fight side by side with one another in several instances. During a cataclysmic battle of epic proportions, the Ultimate Universe is destroyed, and Miles (along with his parents) are sent to the main stream Marvel Universe where Ultimate Miles Morales joins up with Amazing Peter Parker. Parker goes on to work with the Avengers as ‘Spider-Man International’ fighting crime on a global scale while Miles stays in New York City as a local friendly neighborhood hero.

It is clear that the Ultimate Universe is giving major direction to the MCU, whether or not it follows it so far as to see Peter die (but not really) and then have Miles take over the iconic role has not been announced, but it seems that it could definitely happen. Who knows? the comics are excellent, and this could be a great journey before a spectacular passing of the torch.

Spider-Man: Homecoming can still be found in a theater near you, however it is available for digital download now as of 9/26. The film will be available on blu-ray 10/17.
