[dropcap size=small]M[/dropcap]elissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) has been cast as Supergirl in the upcoming series for CBS.
The news of the casting comes after several other stars had been in talks for the part, including Claire Holt (Vampire Diaries) and UK model and soap star Gemma Atkinson. Benoist previously starred in Glee on FOX, and was recently featured in the Academy Award nominated film Whiplash.
For Supergirl, the hourlong drama will center on Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers, which she shares with Superman.
The show has already received a series commitment with CBS, with Arrow showrunner Greg Berlanit and No Ordinary Family’s Ali Adler serving as executive producers for the series, and penning the pilot episode.
