He instead chose to work on The Dark Tower because it was more Alright, Alright, Alright.
Matthew McConaughey, beach bum turned serious actor-man, has revealed why he chose not to be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Back in October 2015, it was reported that McConaughey was the first choice to play the villain in Guardians Vol. 2, with supplementary reports later claiming it was the role of Star-Lord’s father, but the actor passed on the project
In a recent interview with Playboy (proceed with caution), the actor explained that did not want to be in Guardians Vol. 2 because the role might “feel like an amendment.”
“I like Guardians of the Galaxy,” says McConaughey. “But what I saw was ‘It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.'”
McConaughey proceeded to talk about his role as the Man in Black in the upcoming The Dark Tower, an adaptation of Stephen King’s fantasy western series. By passing on Guardians Vol. 2, McConaughey was able to work The Dark Tower instead.
“The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black—a.k.a. the Devil—in my version of this Stephen King novel. We’ve done the first one. It’s a fantastic thriller that takes place in another realm, an alternate universe, but it’s very much grounded. For instance, the gunslinger’s weapon isn’t a lightsaber or something; it’s a pistol. I enjoyed approaching my character as if I were the Devil having a good time, getting turned on by exposing human hypocrisies wherever he finds them. “
McConaughey on set for The Dark Tower
We would have loved to see McConaughey in an MCU film, but we also (kinda) understand why he would feel being cast in Guardians Vol. 2 would feel like he’s just a check mark on a list. He’s clearly passionate about The Dark Tower, so we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for that as well.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5.
The Dark Tower releases on July 28.
