With the 11th season of Supernatural under way, I dive into the top ten villains that the Winchesters have faced since year one!
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]t long last, Supernatural is finally back! If you are all caught up with the show, you may have noticed that Sam and Dean’s biggest challenge is ahead of them: The Darkness. We don’t know much about her yet, but we do know more about what other villains that the Winchesters have faced so far. There were some very difficult cuts to keep off this list. Here is the top 10 villains in the Supernatural show. If you are not caught up with the show, some spoilers will be revealed in this list.
10. Dick Roman and the Leviathans
In season 7, the fandom was introduced to the Leviathans when Castiel brought them and 40 million monster souls out of purgatory to become as powerful as God. This was the only way that Castiel was able single-handily kill Raphael by just snapping his fingers. By doing that, he unleashed the Leviathans, led by Dick Roman. As a successful business man, Roman then proceeded to put the Leviathans as the top species on Earth by poisoning the fructose that makes all food (except naturally grown) poison, meaning Dean couldn’t get his pie when Sam went to get food. He even told Crowley to his face that demons are worse than humans and would take great pleasure in exterminating all the demons. Perhaps the way he hit the fan base hardest is when he killed Bobby Singer (still hate him for that). Thankfully, Dean avenged his death by killing him in the season finale of season 7.
9. Rowena
Unlike Roman and the Leviathans, Rowena, former member of the Grand Coven and a very powerful witch, is still alive and her location is unknown at this point in time (although she will make her appearance in next week’s episode.) Rowena was first mentioned in season 8 by Crowley as his mother, but we never saw them together til she made her first appearance in season 10. With her hex bags and wisdom of powerful spells, Rowena is the most powerful witch and she has been around for centuries, due to her ability to live without age being a factor. The scene below turning a witch that wanted her dead into a pet just shows how cruel she can be. Rowena’s biggest impact was removing the Mark of Cain from Dean, which unleashed The Darkness onto the world.
8. Zachariah
When you think of angels, you think of them as those that are good and defend people against evil. After Zachariah’s introduction, not so much. In order to stop Lucifer, Zachariah had to get Dean to say yes to Michael in order for him to become his vessel. Zachariah would go to the extreme by giving Sam and Adam stomach cancer before Dean said yes. Dean was close to becoming Michael’s vessel (also known as Michael’s sword) when he finally said yes to Zachariah. But after Michael was summoned and he was on his way down from heaven, Dean killed Zachariah, which saved Sam and Adam from stomach cancer. Unfortunately for Adam, he was trapped in the room where Michael was summoned and became his vessel.
7. Ruby
Although she is a demon, Ruby first appears as an ally to the Winchesters, specifically Sam. From teaching Sam how to kill demons and drink their blood to get stronger to giving him a knife and a replica of the Colt that kills demons makes it look like she is the best ally they’ve had, right? Little did we know until the season finale that Ruby wanted Sam to kill Lilith because she was the final seal to releasing Lucifer. She was successful with convincing Sam to kill Lilith to release Lucifer. Unfortunately for her, Sam kills her immediately, but it was too late and Lucifer was able to walk the Earth once again.
6. Metatron
Well, isn’t this a trend we have here? Another character that, at first, befriended the Winchesters and Castiel. Metatron, an angel scribe tasked with writing the Word of God, was helping Sam go through the Trials of Heaven, as well as help Castiel “save” Heaven by closing it, which would seal all the angels in Heaven. But Castiel was tricked and had his grace taken and used in a spell that cast every angel out of Heaven. Metatron then proceeds to rebuild Heaven by bringing in angels that are loyal to him and look at him as their new God. He achieves the title of God by stealing the Angel Tablet from the Winchester and assigns his second in command, Gadreel, to kill Kevin, another scribe of God. Perhaps what could have been the biggest hit to the show was when Metatron killed Dean and we all thought he was dead, until Crowley and the Mark of Cain brought him back as a demon. I honestly don’t know how the show could go on without Dean. Eventually, Castiel breaks the Angel Tablet and the other angels lock Metatron up in Heaven. Toward the end of season 10, Metatron escapes from Castiel and his current location in season 11 is unknown.
5. Abaddon
Abaddon is one of the most powerful characters of all the villains in Supernatural, as she is one of the two Knights of Hell left walking the Earth (the other is her master, Cain.) In season 8, Abaddon makes her debut by getting demons to rebel against Crowley, the King of Hell. Her main objective was to time travel to present day, kill Henry Winchester and retrieve the key to the Order of Letters. But she turned her head to how Hell was being run under Crowley and didn’t like what she was seeing, so she decided to run for the Queen of Hell herself. The Winchesters countered by having Crowley show them the way to Cain and giving Dean the Mark of Cain. Then, Abaddon trusted Crowley to help her trap the Winchesters, but when they arrived at the house she was at, Abaddon’s powers were immune against Dean, due to the Mark of Cain. Abaddon was then killed by Dean and the First Blade.
4. Cain
The first son of Adam and Eve and the first Knight from Hell comes in a number four. Cain has existed for centuries and decided to become a knight in Hell after Abel accepted a deal with Lucifer to become his second in command with him in Hell. Cain countered that by taking Abel’s spot, while Abel would go to Heaven. But the catch was that Cain had to kill Abel, which he did. Cain revealed this to Dean when he was confronted about the First Blade and the Mark of Cain. Even when the Mark was gone, Cain still had the urge to go and kill people, specifically his descendants. In his life, Cain killed thousands of people and was not about to stop because he gave Dean the Mark of Cain. He was eventually stopped when Dean killed him in season 9 with his own blade.
3. Crowley
Since his first appearance in season 5, Crowley has been a regular on the show. He is sly Demon who rose from a simple crossroads demon to the King of Hell (not a bad promotion right there.) Crowley is all about survival and being on top. So there were times where Crowley will side with the Winchesters so he doesn’t get killed from the likes of Lucifer, Abaddon, and basically most main enemies of the Winchesters. Even though he has survived so far in the show, he has been in very close cases where he really should be dead and maybe the Winchesters luck rubbed off onto him.
2. Azazel (AKA Yellow Eyes)
I know that most people would put him at number one and it really was a toss up between him and my number one pick. He’s the classic first villain that you see in the show that put John Winchester (and eventually Sam and Dean) on their path as hunters. Although he had the help of Lucifer to make out his plan for Sam, he executed very well and survived some situations that most people would not. He was also one of the few villains that survived more than one season in the series (lived in seasons one and two.) Unfortunately for him, he died in the season 2 finale when Dean shot him with the Colt in the graveyard where the gates of Hell was opened by Jake Talley, another character that had demon blood flowing through him just like Sam. The scenes below with Jake are classic Azazel and why I like him at number 2!
1. Lucifer
Azazel could easily have this spot because everyone loves the classic villain from seasons one and two. But we are talking about the devil himself, who told Azazel his plan and had him set it all up. When Lucifer was released from his cage, he was relentless to get Sam to say yes (although not as forceful as Zachariah was with getting Dean to say yes.) He basically tricked Sam into thinking that he could withstand the devil when Lucifer took Sam as his vessel. Although he was thrown back into his cage at the end of season 5, it was funny seeing him follow Sam after he was raised from the pit in season 6. It is noted that he could return in season 11 to help fight The Darkness (or double-cross the Winchesters, whatever floats his boat.) But most importantly why he is number one on this list: He’s still alive! He’s just trapped and most of the villains on this list are dead (except Crowley, Rowena and Metatron).
Be sure to keep up with Supernatural every Wednesday at 8 P.M. Central time on the CW!
