Chinese-American actress Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in the original animated movie, approved of the casting as well.

Good news Disney fans! Liu Yifei has been cast as Mulan in the live-action remake of Disney’s 1998 animated movie. The news has been widely hailed as a great decision by Disney after thousands of people took part in an online campaign calling for the end of whitewashing in films where white actors portraying Asian roles. Several films recently came under fire for this (looking at you Matt Damon in The Great Wall) but Disney wisely sidestepped this political disaster.

Commonly known as “Fairy Sister” in China for her delicate features and several fantasy drams, Liu Yifei was supposedly hand-picked out of almost 1,000 other candidates. In China, many fans were very happy with the news with one fan saying, “Needs to know martial arts, can also speak English, has star quality – it definitely should be Liu Yifei.” With such a great casting choice it’ll be interesting to see who Disney casts next.
