Star Wars Film ‘ The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Gets First Official Trailer

Star Wars may have been creatively turbulent for years, but when it works, it works big.

There was a time when simply showing a tiny green creature sipping soup could break the internet. Now, seven years after the galaxy collectively lost its mind over a Force-using toddler, Disney and Lucasfilm have officially dropped the first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, a theatrical swing that feels like both a victory lap and a “please clap” moment rolled into one beskar-plated package.

Take a look:

The premise is refreshingly straightforward in a franchise that hasn’t always been: following the fall of the Galactic Empire, the New Republic enlists Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu to deal with lingering Imperial warlords who are still making life miserable across the galaxy. It’s the kind of clean, post-Empire chaos that made the early seasons of The Mandalorian feel like a gritty space Western instead of a galactic group project with too many cameos.

Leading the charge is Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, the veteran Mandalorian bounty hunter who communicated 90 percent of his emotions through helmet tilts in the series he hails from but seemingly will be reducing that to about 70 percent in the upcoming movie, if the trailer is any indication. Grogu returns as his little companion, an infant of Yoda’s species brought to life through animatronics and puppetry, enhanced with visual effects, continuing to prove that practical effects and big brown eyes remain Disney’s most powerful weapon.

The film also brings in some intriguing heavy hitters. Sigourney Weaver joins as Ward, a colonel leading the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers and a former Rebel Alliance pilot. Toonami legend Steve Blum reprises Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, the Lasat captain fans first met in Star Wars Rebels. Meanwhile, Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) steps into the slimy role of Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son, proving that even in a galaxy far, far away, nepotism is undefeated. Rounding things out is Jonny Coyne as an Imperial Warlord leading one of the Empire’s leftover factions—because apparently the Empire had more middle management than we realized.

And honestly? The trailer looks legit. It has scale. It has grit. It has that “lone gunfighter and his tiny chaos gremlin” energy that made the original show must-see TV. It just looks like a well-adapted film made by a team of competent film makers. In fact, it looks more like what many fans hoped the Disney+ seasons of the series would lean into: focused storytelling, quality set designs, and fewer detours into “surprise, here’s another spinoff pilot.”

That said, there’s an undeniable elephant in the room. The Mandalorian hype peaked around 2019. Baby Yoda merch colonized Earth. Group chats were renamed. Grown adults debated whether calling him “baby Yoda” was still acceptable after the official Grogu name was revealed. Releasing a theatrical follow-up years after that cultural fever pitch feels a bit like showing up to your buddy’s backyard barbecue with fireworks a week after Independence Day.

Still, despite a decade of uneven direction and franchise fatigue, the idea of a tightly focused Mandalorian adventure on the big screen is hard to resist. Star Wars may have been creatively turbulent for years, but when it works, it works big. And this trailer suggests Disney is betting that Din and Grogu are still the safest hands in the galaxy.

The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters May 22. Whether it reignites the cultural wildfire or simply delivers a solid, blaster-scarred space Western, one thing is clear: we’re strapping in. Beskar helmet optional.
