“Jurassic Apocalypse” or “Jurassic World 2”?
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]fter waiting 22 years for the true sequel to Jurassic Park, it seems the wait for the sequel to Jurassic World is only 3 years away. But what else could possibly happen on the Isla Nublar, or surrounding islands? Jurassic World director, Colin Trevorrow has given a few hints as to what could possibly be in the sequel.
Two main plots emerge from loose-ends in Jurassic World. The first idea deals mainly with the concept of other sources creating dinosaurs, a concept that character B. D. Wong mentions in Jurassic World: “We’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur”. In Jurassic Park, character Dennis Nedry attempted to smuggle dinosaur embryos off the island and deliver them to a company called BioSyn. While Nedry failed in the first attempt, who’s to say that someone from Jurassic World didn’t succeed? Trevorrow neither confirms, nor denies the possibility, but says that the idea is ‘something in which he sees potential for growth’.
The second possible plot idea has to do with the concept of bioengineering dinosaurs as military assets. Character Vic Hoskins was determined to train velociraptors to replace human soldiers on the battlefield, utilizing the non-human evolutionary advantages and limiting human casualties in war. The idea to genetically create the ideal weapon in modern warfare was the underlying purpose of the Indominus rex. Although Jurassic World proved that created a self-aware and superior weapon without proper training was a bad idea, maybe someone somewhere in the world will get it right. To best sum up the, Trevorrow states “I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponize it and later on we found it could be used for energy”.
Although waiting 3 years for this sequel is nothing compared to the 22 years before, it’s still a long time for the plot to develop.
Jurassic World 2 is set to be released on June 22, 2018.
