Can Tim Allen play Knuckles?
Casting has already begun for the “I can’t believe this is really happening” CGI/live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and we may have our Dr. Robotnik.
Deadline reports that comedian and King of the 90’s Movie Star Jim Carrey is negotiating with Paramount to portray Dr. Eggman in the upcoming Sonic movie.
Carrey is, of course, known for this 20+ year career in Hollywood, starring in successful comedies like The Mask, Liar Liar, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Bruce Almighty.
The Bowser to Sonic’s Mario, Dr. Eggman (or Robotnik in earlier games) is usually the main antagonist in every Sonic game, scheming to enslave woodland critters and create robotic armies, or using the Chaos Emeralds for no good. Although occasionally dastardly, Eggman is usually more of a goofball than a serious threat, with other more dangerous villains like Metal Sonic or Shadow the hedgehog stealing the spotlight.
We don’t know much about the Sonic movie yet, but it will apparently (per Forbes) be a buddy cop movie where Sonic, a “juvenile delinquent” goes on an adventure with a small town police officer. Oh boy.
The film will be directed by visual effects artist Jeff Fowler, and stars James Marsden and Tika Sumpter in live-action roles (with Marsden presumably taking the police officer role).
We’re not so hot on the Sonic movie right now, but Carrey is an extremely talented comedian with slapstick skills that could lend well to Dr. Eggman’s goofy tendencies.
Sonic the Hedgehog runs into theaters sometime in 2019.
