Just what is the American term for ‘Muggle?’

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he upcoming prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, will not only showcase J.K. Rowling world’s before that famous wizard we all know and love with a scar on his forehead was even born, we’ll also get to see it stateside, as the film is set in New York city.

That’s right, we’ll follow Newt Scamander as he loses himself among the witches and wizards in that big American city, and this of course means that there will be some noticeable differences between the wizarding community we’ve so often seen in an English setting.

That one famous phrase pretty much everyone has heard of, or knows – even if they don’t like Harry Potter (for shame!) – is, rather obviously, ‘Muggle.’ The term used when referring to the average Joe who doesn’t possess magical abilities.

So basically you and me. It’s okay, I pretend I’m magical too – we all do it. I’m sure there are still eleven year olds waiting for that acceptance letter from Hogwarts; never let go of the dream, people!

So just what do the magical American’s call those folk known as ‘Muggles’? Well, instead of ‘Muggles’ it’s the rather simplistic term ‘No-Maj’ – meaning no magic.

It’s interesting that Rowling decided to throw in some new vernacular for the wizards across the pond from Harry, and throws light on the fact that ‘Muggle’ isn’t a universal term in Rowling’s world for non-magical beings.

It does make you wonder what else will be different within the community that we’ll get acquainted with alongside Newt in the upcoming film next year.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is due out in theatres 18 November, 2016.
