Trevorrow talks his involvement in future Jurassic World installments, claims he has set the table for several interesting ideas.

[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]e don’t need to tell you that Jurassic World is getting a sequel. The film has grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, racing past both Avengers films on its way to becoming the third highest-grossing movie ever. There was always going to be a sequel.

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return for Jurassic World 2. Steven Spielberg will stay on as producer, while Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is confirmed to return as writer of the second. Whether he will direct again, Trevorrow himself doesn’t know, but he does know where the franchise is heading, and he has revealed all in an exclusive interview with Wired.

‘Whether or not I am involved in later installments, I felt it was important for me to set the table. I know that Steven definitely wants to make several of these movies, and I want to do my job in setting the table for something that can be rich and thoughtful and interesting.’

This process starts, according to Trevorrow, with a change in location.

‘It won’t be just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island. That’ll get old real fast. I feel like this is an idea that isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. When you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponise it and later on we found it could be used for energy.

‘This is a seed I wanted to plant in this movie – What if this went open source? It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur? I think it’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for the universe to expand.’

So it looks like the InGen won’t be the only one making dinosaurs by the time the film comes around, and that the franchise is going to follow Jurassic Park in moving off-island. Let’s hope that works out a little better this time.

Jurassic World 2 is scheduled for release in June, 2018.
