A few months ago, Activision confirmed that with this year’s Call of Duty they would be going back to their roots, also known as “boots on the ground.”
Now, “going back to their roots” could mean anything but the most logical decision would be to take it back to the World War II setting. Call of Duty 1-3 and World at War were all set during World War II.
An article released back in 2015 by IGN shows an interview with Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg, asking if he expected the World War II shooter to make a comeback. Hirshberg told IGN it was certainly possible.
Hirshberg went on to say:
“There are these moments where certain ideas seem to be floating in the collective consciousness, and there are two ‘meteor hitting the earth’ movies in one summer and were both in production for years. Those kinds of things happen. so there’s definitely a chasing of innovation and new ideas within a well-worn genre that lead people to similar conclusions like changing time periods. And of course, I think that opens up the opportunity for what is old is new again.”
Hirshberg would not elaborate on their future plans, however recently a YouTuber by the name of TheFamilyVideoGamers received images anonymously of promotional materials steel book designs each showing off World War II beach landings, weapons, and clothing.
Activision has fully acknowledged that gamers don’t want the futuristic timeline that they have provided in these previous COD titles. So 2017’s Call of Duty being in the WWII setting isn’t that hard to believe.
Nothing has been confirmed from Activision themselves yet so these are just rumors.
Call of Duty has been released in November for the past 10 years; therefore I can’t think of a reason why this year’s Call of Duty would be any different. We can expect a reveal and release date at E3 or before. Below is the pattern of the previously released Call of Duty games in order.
- Call of Duty: Ghosts release date: Nov 5, 2013
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare release date: Nov 4, 2014
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 release date: Nov 6, 2015
- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare release date: Nov 4, 2016
- Call of Duty: World War II release date prediction: Nov 8, 2017
