Ahead of E3, details regarding some of what you can expect in the Avengers Project have leaked and made its way to various social outlets, including a very promising Reddit post over on the /r/MarvelAvengersProject sub. Information is being scrubbed from news sources left and right, but a quick breakdown of the game’s description and showcase presence appears to be as follows:
“Embrace your powers and join key members of the development team at Crystal Dynamics and the creative team at Marvel Games as they talk exclusively about the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers. This is the defining Avengers gaming experience: an epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with continuous single-player and co-operative gameplay. Moderated by Andrea Rene, assemble in teams up to four players, master extraordinary abilities, customize your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers to defend an ever-expanding world under constant threat.”
Square Enix announced that Marvel’s Avengers will be showcased during their E3 press conference on June 10, at 6:00PM PST.
The Avengers game project is coming from a variety of heavy-hitters in the gaming industry, including Crystal Dynamics (dev behind the Tomb Raider reboot including Rise of the Tomb Raider), Eidos-Montréal (dev behind Deus Ex), and Square-Enix (you know who they are).
The plan is meant to be a multi-year and multi-game partnership that has many wondering if we will see gameplay styles that fit into a similar manner as Marvel’s Spider-Man, a title from Sony Interactive and Insomniac that won many awards and received critical acclaim.
To be honest, we have not got the slightest idea on how characters like Iron-Man or Thor could be playable in Marvel’s Avengers. Considering they can fly, it might be tricky to have mechanics in a game that tailor to those types of heroes when say, Captain America is more of a beat-em-up brawler, and Hulk just… smashes things, I guess.
There has been a long discussion surrounding alleged rumors on this game and the “multi-year plan”, and we hope it turns into an MGU like so many else do. Personally, there is nothing to suggest that it will turn into a shared gaming universe, but considering this is an Avengers project, it is possible we will see other Marvel heroes popping in and out throughout the campaign.
Whatever the plan is, we are hyped, considering the studios involved all show major promise for stupendous single-player campaign gameplay, and their artistic direction to boot. Even if the game is not a massive open-world (and we really hope it is), it will be interesting to see what plans Marvel has for the gaming industry outside of titles like Ultimate Alliance 3.
