After 10 years of not much at all, Mel Gibson is back to doing what he does best: making movies, and publicly swearing at things.
Last weekend saw his return to directing, Hacksaw Ridge, receive a 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, and the World War II story is beginning to pick up Oscar buzz following a succession of positive reviews.
On the other hand, Batman v Superman did not receive positive reviews, and Gibson has jumped aboard the anti-DC bandwagon after a discussion over Hacksaw Ridge‘s budget went awry.
‘It’s a piece of shit. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic-book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot. I’m not interested in that stuff.’
Gibson, who is clearly somewhat interested in that stuff, went on to suggest that Dawn of Justice wasn’t worth its budget of $250 million, having revealed that Hacksaw Ridge was made on a budget of just $40 million.
‘I’m really baffled by it. I think there’s a lot of waste. You’re spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, and I don’t know how you make it back after the tax man gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors.’
Agree or disagree, there is one fact in all this: Mel Gibson could make 6.25 movies with Batman v Superman‘s budget, and they’d all get better reviews.
Hacksaw Ridge stars Andrew Garfield as the first Conscientious Objector to receive the Medal of Honor, and opens in US theatres on November 4th.
