The Big G is going back to his roots in 2016.
[dropcap size=small]L[/dropcap]et us begin with some slight clarification. Godzilla Resurgence is an upcoming Godzilla movie that will be produced and distributed by Toho. This should not be confused with Legendary’s yet-to-be named Godzilla (2014) sequel. Two different universes with two different Godzillas.
Now that that is out of the way, on to the good stuff.
The trailer serves as an official announcement that the movie is on the way. It shows a lot of people running from a Cloverfield style point of view and ends with the iconic roar, which is the exact roar heard and used in the original Godzilla.
This will be the first time Toho will release a Godzilla film since Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004. There is no word yet whether or not this will be a standalone film or the beginning of a whole new Godzilla era.
There is some friendly competition going on between Legendary and Toho. When the film was first announced shortly after the release of Legendary’s Godzilla, produced Taichi Ueda said, “The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.” Another Toho staffer shared the same view and in a different interview said, “This is very good timing after the success of the American version this year: if not now, then when?”
An English poster was also released along with the trailer.
Some may say that eyes look sort of goofy, but this design is going back towards the original design of Godzilla back in 1954.
Safe to say the world is eagerly awaiting more news on the King of the Monsters.
Godzilla Resurgence roars in Japanese theaters July 29th, 2016. There has been no word on an America release date yet.
