Update: Benicio Del Toro Might Not Be Playing a Villain in ‘Star Wars VIII’

It looks like Del Toro could be del trolling.

A couple of weeks ago, Oscar-winning actor Benicio Del Toro told Rac 1 that he would have a villainous role in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Well, it turns out that might not actually be the case.

In an interview with ET during the Toronto Film Festival, Del Toro clarified, in a rather coy fashion, what allegiance his character in the upcoming sequel will have.

“I don’t know if he’s a villain,” Del Toro said. “People are saying that, but it’s like they read a different script than I read.”

Del Toro went on to make even more cryptic comments regarding his character:

“It’s nice to keep people in the dark, a little bit of mystery is good. If they want to believe it’s the villain, then good.”

Hmm…Interesting.

This whole scenario honestly sounds like the classic case of Del Toro revealing more information than he was supposed to. I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney and Lucasfilm didn’t want Del Toro spilling the beans on his character so early in the film’s production, and now they want him to backtrack, or remain quiet on the matter.

But who knows. Maybe Del Toro’s character isn’t really a villain, and he’s actually a long-lost Jedi who has returned to assist The Resistance?!

Regardless, we probably won’t know if Del Toro’s character will actually be for some time. Episode VIII just recently began production, and the film is still a couple of years away.

Del Toro’s mystery character won’t make his debut in Episode VIII until May 26, 2017. Until then, I’m sure you know darn well that Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes to theaters on December 18.
