Lady Thor Has Been Revealed- MCU to be Impacted?

Thor Odinson is no more, or at least not in the way he was. But does this development look to affect the MCU?

FemaleThor3Last summer Marvel announced that Thor Odinson was putting down the mighty hammer of the gods, Mjolnir. Why? The answer is simple; he was/is no longer worthy. Instead, a new being, who is worthy of wielding Mjolnir will be stepping in to replace him.

Likely in an effort to appease those who believe that Marvel, or at least the inception of the comic characters that date back to the early 1960s and even before, are quite sexist, a woman was placed in the role of the God of Thunder.

Now, if I am being honest on the subject; comics are a bit sexist in that very few female characters exist front and center, and the ones the do all wear skimpy tight clothing that bear a lot of skin. Full disclosure; I am not complaining about that, but I am not interested in picking sides. But it is nice to know that Marvel is listening to their massive fanbase and are looking to include more in what has been a long overdue demand for comic equality.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon deleted his Twitter account after receiving criticism and blow-back for Black Widow’s role in the film, which unlike the first Avengers movie, featured the character in a mother-like role to where Romanov references always having to be “cleaning up” after the boys. Not to mention her entire role seemed to be focused on a relationship with Bruce Banner instead of her usual super-spy butt-kicking role she is expected to have.

I tell you all of this to give you a bit to think about before revealing who this new female Thor is. Be warned, the spoilers below could interfere with your comic reading agenda.

**SPOILERS BELOW**

Within Thor and Thor: The Dark World, the love interest of the God of Thunder is Jane Foster, a scientist looking to find the answers to the interstellar mysteries surrounding the vast space between our world and the countless others mankind has yet to discover.

Jane Foster’s presence in the comic books are different from in the films, as is the case in nearly every comic book adaptation, though in the comics the character goes through a MASSIVE change of wielding Mjolnir and becoming the new Thor. The only problem? Jane has cancer, and every time she uses Mjolnir it pushes the cancer to spread further through her frail human body.

Of course all of this information is confined to the pages of the Marvel Comic Book Universe(s), but the idea behind bringing Lady Thor into the MCU is intriguing and exciting. There really has not been a female hero with super powers on the big screen in some time, the two that come to mind are Marvel’s Elektra and DC’s Catwoman, both of which do not necessarily have ” super powers” per se, but ninja-like skills and cat-like reflexes, literally.

Black Widow is the closest thing we have to a female hero until DC’s Dawn of Justice introduces us to the Amazonian Wonder Woman. Marvel likely won’t see a featured hero until at least November 2018 in Carol Danvers as Ms Marvel in the Captain Marvel film, which will take place in between Infinity War Part I and Part II.

Jane Foster has not been featured much outside of her role within the Thor films, only being referenced or shown via photograph in the Avengers movies. Though as time goes on, new developments arise, plot twists unravel, anything is possible to see her return in Thor or beyond as a hero, portrayed by Natalie Portman or someone else.

Only speculation at this point, the idea of more female heroes could create a very interesting and entertaining chemistry on-screen with the existing heroes of the MCU. The only drawback is, at this point in time we have to wait a few years to see what we are already promised in the form of the highly anticipated Captain Marvel. Fingers crossed for Lady Thor some day.
