Straight Outta Compton takes the top spot on the box office report by nearly $40 million with no signs of dropping.
Straight Outta Compton topped the box office this weekend surpassing its production budget and taking the top spot for largest debut of all-time for an R-rated film in August. The movie had a fairly cheap production budget of about half of the $56.1 million it made on its opening weekend. The movie has been plastered all over billboards and bus stops for quite some time now and it paid off by soaring above all other films in this weekend’s box office reports.
Mission Impossible was an obvious second after taking the number 1 spot last weekend with a second weekend gross of $17 million bringing its total to nearly $140 million. The movie has almost made $400 million total worldwide giving Paramount a solid reason to start thinking about a 6th installment of the Mission Impossible series. The Man From U.N.C.L.E came in third with some disappointing results at below $15 million for its first three days in theatres. While it was not expected that the film do as well as other famous spy films, Warner Bros. can’t be too happy with these numbers.
Surprisingly enough, Fantastic Four was in the number four spot, but there was not too much to compete with. The movie dropped nearly 70% in sales plummeting to only $8 million dollars domestically this weekend. It only has grossed about $42 million domestically and $102 million internationally as it inches to break even with its $120 million production budget. Other notable titles include Ant-Man and Minions who took the number 6 spot and the number 8 spot respectively. Minions brought in another $5.2 million this week bringing the animated film’s total to a whopping $312.9 million dollars. The complete top ten went as follows:
TOP TEN
- Straight Outta Compton- $56.1 Million
- Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation- $17 Million
- The Man From U.N.C.L.E- $13.5 Million
- Fantastic Four- $8 Million
- The Gift (2015)- $6.5 Million
- Ant-Man- $5.5 Million
- Vacation- $5.3 Million
- Minions- $5.2 Million
- Ricki and the Flash- $4.5 Million
- Trainwreck- $3.8 Million
The numbers were pretty predictable this week with a few disappointments. No extremely tide-changing films are expected to come out for a few weeks so it’s pretty safe to say that the box office numbers should stay pretty consistent.
