Hmm, yeah, Ryan Reynolds would probably make a great Hal Jordan.
The Wrap has revealed six actors that are apparently being considered by DC and Warner Bros. for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming film, Green Lantern Corps.
The actors are Tom Cruise, Bradley Cooper, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joel McHale, Armie Hammer, and Ryan Reynolds.
As a fun aside, Cruise, Gyllenhaal, and McHale have never starred in superhero movies before. Cooper, however, is currently voicing Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU. Hammer was initially cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman for Justice League: Mortal, a live-action adaptation that never happened (read more about that here, it’s super fascinating). Reynolds, of course, has already portrayed Hal Jordan in the critically panned flop Green Lantern from 2011.
Although these actors are the top picks from the studio, casting and production of any kind for this film is still in very early stages of development. We do know that movie is being written by David Goyer and Justin Rhodes, and has been pitched as “Lethal Weapon in space.”
Our Take:
This list is hilarious. Sure, Cruise, Gyllenhaal, and Cooper are all obvious studio choices for a lead role in any film, but the inclusion of Reynolds seems like twisted joke. Reynolds has been very open about his disappointed with his Green Lantern movie (as we are as well), not to mention in Deadpool (the superhero project he wanted to do), the film is mocked numerous times.
It just seems tone-deaf of DC and Warner Bros. to even think considering Reynolds to play Hal Jordan again would be possible. Then again, if this somehow actually happens, it would be hilarious and we would love it.
Or just give it to Joel McHale. He’d be great.
Green Lantern Corps hits theaters on July 24, 2020.
