Trailers: Magic Mike XXL, Mr. Holmes, and Return to Sender.
MAGIC MIKE XXL
In this sequel to 2012’s Magic Mike we are reunited with Mike (Channing Tatum) and the rest of the Kings of Tampa. Mike decides to come out of man-stripper retirement for one last performance with the guys in Myrtle Beach that is sure to be entertainingly over the top. It looks to be the perfect movie to go see with your grandma. Just kidding, she never saw the first one. She’d be so lost. All jokes aside, the cast is pretty solid, there appear to be a bunch of fun cameos, and any movie with a character named Big Dick Richie has to be good.
Magic Mike XXL stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias, Amber Heard, Donald Glover, Andie MacDowell, Elizabeth Banks, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Written by Reid Carolin and directed by Gregory Jacobs. In theaters July 1.
MR. HOLMES
Sir Ian McKellen plays a 93-year-old version of Sherlock Holmes as he remembers the good ol’ days of solving crimes when he was at the top of his game. As he shares his stories with his housekeeper’s son, Mr. Holmes ultimately ends up revisiting the same case that initially led to his retirement. Mr. Holmes is based on the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin. A more dramatic take on the character that is sure to be the opposite of the action-packed Guy Ritchie version that we’ve seen in recent years. Though word on the street is that McKellen did all of his own stunts.
Mr. Holmes stars Sir Ian McKellen, Colin Starkey, Laura Linney, Hattie Morahan, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Patrick Kennedy. Written by Bill Condon and Jeffrey Hatcher. Directed by Bill Condon. In theaters July 17.
RETURN TO SENDER
Rosamund Pike of Gone Girl fame plays a nurse in a small town that goes on a blind date gone horrible. As she struggles with putting her life back together, she might also be plotting to exact her revenge. This trailer doesn’t really make it clear as to what she intends on doing, but the obnoxiously loud music throughout would suggest that it’s probably not going to end well.
Return to Sender stars Rosamund Pike, Rumer Willis, Scout Taylor-Compton, Nick Nolte, and Shiloh Fernandez. Written by Patricia Beauchamp and Joe Gossett. Directed by Fouad Mikati. In theaters later this year.
