What is worse, EA’s servers or their decision-making skills? You be the judge.
[dropcap size=small]F[/dropcap]ans were reasonably upset when news surfaced that the highly anticipated Star Wars Battlefront would not have a single player campaign. Aside from other disappoint factors like the game not having space battles, it didn’t make sense to fans and critics why such an important and visually stunning game like Star Wars Battlefront wouldn’t give fans a chance to relive the famous moments of episodes four through six. Finally, EA Studios has explained their reasoning behind releasing Star Wars Battlefront without a single player campaign.
It was during an investor presentation yesterday that EA Studios’ executive vice president Patrick Soderlund explained why the game was nothing more than a multiplayer campaign.
“It was a conscious decision we made due to time and being able to launch the game side-by-side with the movie that came out to get the strongest possible impact.”
If the EA studios didn’t have enough time to release Star Wars Battlefront within reason, it would be slightly understandable why the game did not offer a single player campaign. Every game comes with its certain setbacks that make the game’s developer’s life a living nightmare. However, that doesn’t really seem to be the case here for EA and when you realize that even Call of Duty, a game that is certainly only played for its multiplayer platform and not for its single player campaign, actually has a single player campaign you can’t help but feel frustrated.
The biggest irony of EA’s decision to release the game around the same time as Star Wars: The Force Awakens is that Star Wars Battlefront doesn’t actually have any content from The Force Awakens. There is literally nothing in the game that makes a reference to the seventh Star Wars film and because of this, you can’t help but believe that EA only released the game at the same time as the film so that the company would make even more money than what they would have if they released the game several months after the film was released.
“The depth and breadth is something that’s proving to be more and more important in a world where we want $60 upfront and want people to stay with us a for a long time. The depth of what we offer is important. [When] Battlefront came out, it totally nailed a lot of these factors, but we got criticized for the depth and breadth of it.”
EA recently announced earlier this month that a second Star Wars Battlefront will be released sometime next year. The game will include content based on the latest Star Wars films including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Hopefully, EA will listen to its fans and include not only a single player campaign but space battles as well.
