Rumors say that the fifth game will be released the same time as the movie!
[dropcap size=small]S[/dropcap]traight Up Films, the producing studio for the upcoming Thief movie, may also be developing a new game to add to the Thief series.
The studio released the following statement, providing an update to the Thief movie.
“Originally released in 1998 by Eidos Interactive (Deus Ex) and distributed by Square Enix (Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy), the Thief series has spanned over fifteen years and four sequels continually retaining loyal audiences and attracting new fans with each iteration. Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation.”
Now, the studio might have announced the game a bit early. Although there hasn’t been any official announcement from Square Enix, it looks like they are going to release the game at the same time as the movie.
This seems confusing because when Thief was released in 2014 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, developer Eidos Montreal said that the only way that he would make another Thief movie is if the fourth game did really well. While the official sale numbers are unknown, most fans of the series were not happy about the game.
The bottom line is that even if a game is being made and the plan is to release it the same time as the movie, there hasn’t been a director or cast members hired on for the movie. So there is no timetable for when either of these will be released.
