It’s been over a decade since these two spirits were created, now they finally go toe-to-toe against each other!
[dropcap size=small]B[/dropcap]ack in 1998, director Hideo Nakata created a horror film known as Ringu and it turned out to be one of the scariest movies of all-time. A few years later, this movie was remade in the U.S. by Gore Verbinski in 2002 renamed The Ring. The American version starred Naomi Watts as a journalist who investigates a case involving a not-so-ordinary videotape that kills whoever watches it within a week.
While Ringu became very popular in Japan, another horror movie franchise was created in 2000 titled Ju-On. This also got a remake in the States in 2004, renamed The Grudge and directed by Sami Raimi. The success of The Grudge was a big reason why Ash vs. Freddy vs. Jason never went into production.
Both The Ring and The Grudge revolve around a curse and extremely scary spirits, but they have different stories to go about it. In Japan, I’m not sure which one is more popular, but Ju-On did have more sequels to it than Ringu.
The Ring franchise will start up again with another movie in October with the title Rings. But Japan will get their version a lot sooner when it’s released on June 18th.
After reporting it as an April Fool’s Day joke, Kadokowa and NBCUniversal Japan officially agreed to join together to create the best horror movie match: Sadako vs. Kayako.
A short trailer was released on February 25th, but now there is a complete trailer was released yesterday in Japanese.
This has the feel of Jason vs. Freddy, but obviously this will be different. It’s going to be interesting how this battle will go down and given how popular these two franchises are, this has the looks of a classic fight.
Ju-On: The Final was released last summer in Japan and director Sam Raimi is already working on a remake here in the States.
